I’m Peter Young, a photographer from Pictou, Nova Scotia, and I would like to drive across Canada and photograph the trip.
Why on Earth would I want to do that? Well, let me explain. I am moving to Alberta to look for work – which seems to be what many Nova Scotians are doing these days. Unfortunately, while Nova Scotia is a beautiful province, the amount of work available here – with meaningful pay – is hard to come by.
Now, I could just fly to Alberta, find a job, and start working. Bam. Done. Or, I could find a job in Alberta from here in Nova Scotia, fly out and start working. Bam. Done. Or I could drive straight through and make a couple of stops along the way to sleep and eat. But where is the fun in that?
I have always wanted to drive across Canada. It’s one of the big things on my bucket list. But with a country so vast and different, it would be an absolute shame to not make the trip worthwhile. As a photographer, I would like to take my time making my way out. I would like to stop into little towns, big cities, and in the middle of nowhere (which is somewhere to somebody) and photograph what catches my eye. And with all of those photographs, I would like to put together a book titled – you guessed it – Cross Can Adventure: A Photographic Journey.
Here is my plan: I will start out from Nova Scotia and head West. As I go, I will stop when I see something that catches my eye and when I am passing through towns and cities. I am going to write a Travel Blog right here on this site and include a couple of images from that day’s travel. If you would like to follow me on my journey – super! I’d love to have the company!
Depending on financial support, my trip can be limited or expansive. Ultimately, I would like to make it all the way to Vancouver, BC (where my big sister lives, whom I rarely get to see!! Hi Caroline!) and make my way back to Calgary, Alberta. Fortunately, I also have cousins living in Calgary, so I will get to see even more family! If I am unable to raise the amount of funding necessary, I will not be able to make it to the other coast (at which point the title will be come Almost Cross Can Adventure: A Photographic Journey Almost All the Way). We don’t want to see that happen! You do want me to see my big sister, don’t you?
In order to make this happen, I have started an Indiegogo Campaign to raise funds. If you would like to help support me on this project there are some great perks for you! Depending on your level of support, you can get yourself some Cross Can Postcards, High Resolution Digital Image files (so you can print images as BIG or small as you like!), and a few different options for Cross Can Photobooks. These books will only be produced for the people who claim them by donating to a particular funding level. That means they will be extremely Limited Edition – and each of them will also be signed. The photobooks will be produced by a company I use for my Wedding Albums, in Canada, and using only the highest quality materials (The paper the photos will be printed on is AMAZING!)
The book I would like to put together for publishing – Cross Can Adventure: A Photographic Journey – will still be a great book, but produced in larger quantity on cheaper materials. The photobooks you can claim by donating each cost from $65 – $175 to produce. Each. So, of course, part of your donation will go towards the production cost of your book, and the rest will go towards my travel expenses (which I suppose would also be production cost…)
I have put together three galleries here on this website so you can see the caliber of work I can create. As a bit of background information, I have been photographing for nearly 18 years (since age 14). I started with film cameras, and learned film processing in a dark room at NSCAD University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. For the past six and a half years I have been working as a professional portrait and wedding photographer based out of Pictou and New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. I also worked a short stint at a Commercial Studio. Now it is time to start a new chapter in my life, and take this once in a lifetime opportunity to photograph the world around me – a world which continuously fascinates me. I would like to start with Canada.
Thank you to everyone who offers their support through funding and by spreading the word about my project. I for one know that not everyone is capable of offering financial support – but please – that does not mean you can’t help! Share this project with your friends and families, email it, share it on facebook – anything!
